Hotbot uses both the Open Directory Project Directory and listings from the Direct Hit search engine to make up its index of web pages. Direct Hit results appear first followed by ODP results. Inktomi results then form the rest of the entries. The Hotbot Directory is a variation of the ODP data.

Direct Hit works by giving more relevance to popular sites. Those pages that people click on in the search results most will rise to the top of the rankings. It is best to make your description and title very appealing to encourage more clicks.

Getting listed in the ODP will also list your site on Hotbot after a month or so. Hotbot also uses Inktomi results to supplement those supplied by Direct Hit and the ODP.
